The trade counter and the Telford map pack

A counter on Hortonwood has no passing footfall and no shop window. Everything a customer learns before setting off comes from a Google listing. That listing is doing the job a window would do on a high street.

A counter on an estate is not a shop

A high street shop gets found by people already standing nearby. A counter on a Telford estate gets found by a fitter on a job in Shifnal who needs a part within the hour. The listing has to answer a different question.

That question is rarely about your brand. It is about whether you hold the item, whether you are open, and how long the drive takes.

A Google Business Profile answers all three before anyone rings. A weak one answers none of them and the fitter drives to whoever did.

First job

Move the pin to the door people use

Estate addressing in Telford confuses satellite navigation more than it confuses people. Hortonwood 33 and Halesfield 7 are street names rather than building numbers. Route planners frequently drop a pin at the wrong end of a long estate road.

Drag the map marker onto the actual door your customers use. A profile lets you set that marker independently of the postal address. The goods entrance is often not the registered one.

Add the practical detail to the description as well. Which junction to leave the A442 at and which side of the unit the counter sits on both save a phone call.

Eligibility

The primary category caps everything else

The primary category is the highest leverage field on the whole profile. It decides which searches your listing is eligible to appear in at all. A vague choice quietly caps every other thing you do.

Trade counters get this wrong in a specific way. A builders merchant listed as a hardware shop ends up competing with retail hardware and misses the merchant searches entirely.

Secondary categories then widen the net without diluting the first. Hydraulic supplier, hose assembly service and industrial fastener supplier can all sit alongside each other honestly.

Opening times

Counter hours are not office hours

Counter hours and office hours are rarely identical. A counter closing at four while the office runs to five produces a listing that is wrong for the last hour of every working day.

Publish the counter hours, because those are the ones a customer acts on. Add the Saturday morning opening where you have one. Few estate counters open at the weekend and the ones that do get the call.

Special hours matter more here than almost anywhere else. A counter closed for a shutdown week in August needs that stated, or the listing sends people to a locked gate.

Address or service area

Show the address when you have a counter

Hiding the address is correct for a mobile trade and wrong for a counter. A customer who cannot see where you are will simply not set off.

Service area settings can sit alongside a visible address where you also deliver. Both can be true at once and the profile supports it.

Say what the counter actually holds

The services list is a free text field that most counters leave empty. Every entry you add is another phrase the profile can be matched against.

List the things people ring up to ask about. Hose assembly while you wait, key cutting, paint mixing, cylinder exchange and trade account opening are all searchable and all specific.

Photographs of the counter and the yard do the same job visually. A picture of the actual entrance removes the doubt a first time customer has about turning in.

Reviews from trade customers

Trade customers review far less often than consumers and their reviews carry more weight when they arrive. A review naming a part and a turnaround time is worth a dozen generic ones.

Ask at the counter rather than by email. The moment a customer has the part in their hand is the only moment they are thinking about you.

I do not write reviews or solicit them on anyone's behalf. The only defensible route is you asking your own customers directly.

The three numbers that govern a listing

3

listings in a standard map pack MECHANISM

Google shows three local results before the more places link. Fourth position needs a tap most searchers never make.

1

primary category per profile MECHANISM

Google allows exactly one primary category and it decides eligibility. Everything else works inside that choice.

£0

cost of the profile itself MECHANISM

A Google Business Profile costs nothing to create or maintain. The cost is the hour spent configuring it correctly.

Common questions about a counter listing

Can a trade counter and a head office share one profile?

Only where they genuinely share a building. Separate locations need separate profiles. A profile at an address you do not occupy is a policy breach that gets listings suspended.

Does adding keywords to the business name help?

It works briefly and risks a suspension that takes weeks to appeal. Use the name on your signage and your invoices. Nothing else belongs in that field.

Our unit sits inside a larger site with a shared entrance. What then?

Set the pin at the entrance your customers actually use and say so in the description. Shared yards on Halesfield and Hortonwood are common, and one sentence of direction removes most of the confusion.

How often should the profile be updated?

Hours whenever they change and photographs a few times a year. Posts help less than people claim. Treat them as optional rather than essential.

Do we need a website as well as a profile?

Yes. The profile decides whether you appear and the website decides whether anyone believes you. A counter with stock ranges and account terms published online turns far more listing views into visits.
